Our History

The Birth of
Tafo Golf Club

The first indication of golf at Tafo appears in the 1946-1947 Annual Report of the West African Cocoa Research Institute (WACRI) that states: “…A small Club has been built and two tennis courts and nine-hole golf course supply means of recreation.” This marks the beginning of our cherished club’s journey.

Creation of the Golf Course

The area which is now our beloved golf course was once a waterlogged land that bred mosquitoes. To control the mosquito population, the Central Cocoa Research Station instituted a Mosquito Control Scheme where trenches were dug to drain the area. Part of the area was then turned into a vegetable garden and the rest a grazing ground for livestock.

In 1945, the vegetable garden, which belonged to the Department of Agriculture, was taken over by WACRI. The institute leveled the area and planted Dhoub grass (Cynodon dactylon) and Tafo grass (Chrysopogon aciculatus), establishing the foundation for what would become our golf course.

Challenges
and Revival

Golf thrived at Tafo until 1962 when WACRI was dissolved and most expatriates left. The financial situation of the newly created Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana made it difficult to maintain the golf course. The course deteriorated significantly, with some areas even being converted to farmland.

The turning point came in 1969 when Ghana hosted the 3rd International Cocoa Research Conference, which included a visit to CRIG at Tafo. As part of preparations, the golf course was restored, saving it from complete abandonment.

Rebuilding Through Dedication

With the course partially restored, a small group of enthusiasts including Rob Lockwood, Harry Evans, Bill Hutcheon, Terry Legg, and Ben Tetteh began playing regularly. These pioneers worked tirelessly on Sundays to improve the course, breaking rocky outcrops, leveling anthills, removing tree stumps, and replanting Tafo grass on degraded fairways.

In 1977, Ben Tetteh and Bill Hutcheon redesigned the course and painted trees along the fairways to create a more structured layout. The Tafo Golf Club was formally established in 1974 when Peter White sought to participate in competitions organized by the Ghana Golf Association, which required membership in an affiliated club.

Course Development

Throughout the years, the course has undergone significant improvements. In 2002, the club initiated a project to create nine putting greens, transforming the traditional “browns” into proper greens under the supervision of dedicated members. In 2006, a new Hole 6 was created to ease congestion during major competitions.

Promoting Junior Golf

As part of our commitment to the future of golf in Ghana, Tafo Golf Club established a junior golf program that has registered considerable success. The club currently maintains a program for young golfers aged 11-17, providing equipment and organizing monthly competitions to nurture their talents. In 2007, one of our junior golfers was selected to represent Ghana in an African Junior Golf Competition in Zimbabwe.
